“The Court of Women", a unique social initiative, was born when two social workers, Leora Kasal and Mirit Sidi contacted Shuki and Mike Zikri. The idea was to create a different meeting place for girls and women in distress, a way to bypass resistance and approach those who have lost faith in the system, from a different place, through the hair salon.
About six months after that first meeting, The Court of Women opened its doors at 220 Yefet Street in Jaffa, Israel.
“The Court of Women” is operated by a non-profit organization, based on an innovative model which is focused on creating a warm, supportive, alternative environment for girls and women in distress, both Jewish and Arab, in southern Jaffa.
“The Court of Women” has been operating for the past two and a half years, as a protected, open feminine space, filled with activity. In order to create a legitimate space, relevant to the world of the adolescent girls and young women, the court includes a hair salon from Shuki Zikri chain, employing the best hair designers, free of charge or at a very low cost.
In the first two and a half years of the court's operation, about 350 girls and young women, between the ages 13-25, have taken part in the activities. Over 60 girls and women are participating on a regular basis in the various activities, and frequent the court’s open space. The activities at the Court of Women open a path, broaden possibilities, enable the girls to define and strengthen their capabilities. The Court constitutes a part of the girls' and women's routine. The Court’s staff accompanies them in their everyday life, offers an alternative to aimless wandering in the street, helps in finding jobs and completing education, and provides support through the life’s crises and hardships.
